- The object to be held should be a solid piece of a FerroMagnetic material (such as a mild steel block) of sufficient thickness so that it does not attain saturation during this operation. It must not be in the form of very thin sheet or loose particles.
- There is close contact between the magnet poles and the surface of the object.
